Tips on Using Program Templates in Marketo

Creating program templates is ideal for implementing best practices. This ensures accurate setup, while maximizing reporting and tracking. Program templates allow the user to quickly clone and create a new program with only a few necessary changes.  This process increases efficiency and decreases the margin of error – the primary purpose of marketing automation platforms.  In addition, best practices will then be consistent across all programs of the same channel type.

Creating program templates in your Marketo instance is a good idea if the program type is used frequently. Examples of common program template types are:

  • Webinars
  • Live Events
  • Email Blasts
  • Newsletters
  • Pay-Per-Click
  • Engagement Programs

Updates Needed When Cloning

Although cloning program templates greatly decreases creation time, many of the components will need to be updated with corresponding campaigns and asset references. Program updates include the following:

  • Smart Lists
  • Static lists
  • Report selections including emails, landing pages, time frames etc.
  • Program level tokens
  • URLs (they may be appended with the original URLs)

Tokens and Program Templates

Program level tokens are extremely useful when creating program templates.  If the program is setup correctly, Marketo users can simply clone the program template and update the tokens, lists, reports, and URLs to have a complete cloned program.  See our article on Tokens to learn more.
